A Patched Hemp Steaming Cloth: Hazy Darkened Center

This two-panel, rustically woven, undyed hemp cloth was used for steaming in the preparation of food.
The darkened area in the center of the cloth is the part that sustained repeated wear and therefore it is stained from constant exposure to heat and vapor.
One cotton mending patch is stitched to the center of the hemp cloth and due to its also darkened tone it appears the patch was applied in the initial phase of the usage of this steaming cloth.
A simply beautiful old textile from Japan that shows very clearly that the power of happenstance is sometimes is a force that creates unintended beauty.
