A Pair of Indigo Dyed Cotton Heel Guards: Sashiko Stitched
early twentieth century
each: 3 3/4" x 13", 19.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a pair of indigo dyed cotton sashiko stitched akutogake or heel guards. In old Japan people wore accessories to give protection to the body while working, traveling on foot, and the like. Hand guards, gaiters of shin guards, instep guards and heel guards were worn as added protection against abrasion.
These akutogake were placed around the heel of the foot and tied in front. They are hand stitched from indigo dyed cotton and have been heavily sashiko stitched and patched for durability.
The pair shows a beautiful patina from wear and use, and we have to understand that a patina of this subtlety and beauty can only happen naturally over time, which is one of the core ideas defining the famous Japanese concept of wabi sabi.
A beautiful pair of akutogake from old Japan.
