A Neutral-Toned Boro Fragment: Cotton Flannel
ca. mid twentieth century
46" x 18", 117 cm x 45.75 cm
This scrappy and patched small boro cloth is hand stitched from what appears to be commercially produced, old, fairly lightweight cottons that are all similarly colored, the color being a kind of dull spectrum of neutrals. It seems the checked cloth which shows a twill structure may be a kind of flannel or brushed cotton.
The base cloth which is composed of about 7 separate pieces. The hand stitching used to apply these patches to the base is really lovely, and the overall effect is everything you would expect to see on an old boro cloth. The boro cloth is a bit delicate from wear, but not feeble; please note one hole as can be seen on the accompanying detail photographs.
Most likely this fragment was taken from a futon cover or a furoshiki.
Lovely, earthy and quite boro.
