A Mid-Nineteenth Century Lacquered Kneading Bowl: Noodles

$375.00 USD

mid nineteenth century
3" X 12 1/4" diameter, 7.5 cm x 31 cm diameter

This good-sized, fairly shallow wooden bowl shows a red lacquered interior that has been beautifully abraded by what must be years, probably decades, of use.

It is a type of bowl used for kneading dough that will become noodles; this was said to be used for soba, a traditional buckwheat flour noodle.

The bowl is turned and the wood used for it is fairly dense.

What makes this object beautiful is the fact that it is so well-used and that we can see all the traces of its history.

The chipped surface, the dulled lacquer, the beautifully rich low-key red color tone, the very good age are all visually satisfying elements.

Looking at the detail photos you will see a split to the rim and lots of chips to it as well, all are in service of coming together to make this a visually appealing object--and one that is still very much usable if you care to enjoy it that way.

Bowls like this one are not easily found and there is some pride in offering it for sale today.
