A Mended Sakabukuro Fragment: Eccentric Stitching
mid twentieth century
16" x 20", 40.5 cm x 51 cm
This is an eccentric little beauty: it is a fragment from a sakabukuro or a sake straining bag.
The kaki shibu infused cotton is soft and supple, and three of the edges of this fragment have been teased into fringes.
There are three, prominently placed patches on this piece, each of them hand stitched with white cotton thread. There are two mends, each one dense with stitches.
A really beautiful little thing and one with a great deal of character, charm and artistic soul.
