This book is a volume that depicts "ancient" designs or, rather, the kind of designs that belong to Japan's early Nara period (710-794).  The designs are almost all imported from China and in many the influence from Central Asia and the Silk Road can be seen.

There are plentiful depictions of stylized phoenixes and dragons and other mythical creatures, as well as a whole range of fauna and flora which are drawn in line and block printed.

A marvelous compendium of historical patterns and design; a great research tool.

Beautiful.
