A Long Piece of Itajime Shibori: Grid Pattern
early to mid twentieth century
102" x 13", 260 cm x 33 cm
This is a good sized length of indigo dyed cotton that was dyed in the itajime shibori method where the cloth is folded and clamped in order to produce designated patterns or effects.
In this case the pattern is a fairly large-scale, loose grid that is made up of slightly irregularly shaped horizontal and vertical lines.
The length was taken from a utilitarian textile that was hand stitched, possibly a futon cover or some other cloth associated with bedding.
That said this good-sized piece is in very good, used condition with the whites or undyed areas still very bright and the indigo markings are rich and vibrant in tone delivering a high-impact graphic pattern.
