A Long Panel of Kasuri Cotton: Plum Blossoms and Diamond Flower
ca. mid twentieth century
77" x 13", 195.5 cm x 33 cm
What a bold graphic statement is the long piece of indigo dyed kasuri cotton.
Running down the center of this panel is a series of stylized ume or plum blossoms. Creeping in from each of the two selvedge edges is a series of half-flowers, the hanabishi or diamond flower motif, another traditional design used in Japan.
The large scale of each of these two designs in relation to the length and with of this panel is what make it so visually exciting, as is the color combination of deep, deep blue and silvery grey which compose this piece of cotton.
There is one, small, bean-sized hole to this piece, but otherwise it is in good, used condition.
Gorgeous.
