A Long Narrow Length of Gradient Stripes: Patched and Pieced

$45.00 USD
late nineteenth century
68" x 6 3/4", 173 cm x 17 cm

Shown here is a panel that is woven in a pattern composed of regularly spaced stripes of varying widths, creating an effect that is meant to suggest a waterfall.

This pattern was often seen in textile designs from the 19th and early 20th century in Japan and, aside from this historical connection, it is an absolutely beautifully graphic design on its own.

The "background" color is a deep indigo blue. One of the sets of stripes is a silvery-white-grey color and one is a medium tone indigo.

The length is half a full traditional loom width and it is composed of two pieces that were hand stitched together. There is a beautifully executed, circular mend at the bottom of the length.

This is a very attractive length of nicely designed and executed cotton cloth is a traditional pattern
