A Length of Yanagi Shibori: Graphic Blue on White
ca. mid twentieth century
37" x 13", 97 cm x 33 cm
This is a very attractive length of hand dyed shibori, in this case the pattern and technique is what is called yanagi, or willow, shibori.
The bright, white cotton base cloth is powerloomed, not hand loomed and the indigo is likely not botanical. Still, yanagi shibori is a strong pattern and one that is rather especially cherished for its graphic appeal and its allusion to the natural world.
As this length was taken from a yukata or an unlined, casual summer kimono, it still bears some ingrained creases from a lifetime of use.
A beautiful length of cotton which is in very good condition.
