A Length of Wide Striped Cotton: Two Indigo Tones
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
68" x 13", 173 cm x 33 cm
Nothing could be simpler than this length of woven, indigo dyed cotton striped cloth with its alternating wide stripes in medium and dark toned blue.
In Japan there was an endless variety of striped cloth and this is one of the boldest and most straightforward examples to be seen.
It is a wonderful example of country cloth for its simplicity and for being hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns.
Often the most unadorned or least complicated textiles from the Japan of another era give the most visual pleasure and this beauty is no exception. In good, used condition.
Delightful.
