A Length of Wide Striped Cotton: Handwoven
$45.00 USD
ca. late nineteenth century
69" x 13 3/4", 175 cm x 35 cm
Several pieces available.
This is a really lovely length of old, striped indigo dyed cotton which was once part of a futon cover.
The wide stripes are lovely and the dyes are botanical: the reddish color is made from safflower or benibana dye and the yellow could be one of several dyestuffs used for yellow color in old Japan: kihada, a kind of tree bark, turmeric or gardenia seeds, among others.
The condition of the cloth is very good; there is some patina from wear and a tiny, unnoticeable hole or two, but for its age, the condition is fine.
Really lovely.
