A Length of Very Good Shibori: Beautiful Pattern and Wonderful Quality Cotton
early twentieth century
28" x 12 1/4", 71 cm x 31 cm
This is a length of what seems to be hand woven cotton that is dyed in the shibori method: the length is very good-looking and beautifully, if not rustically, executed.
The base is a dappled shibori called miura which is done fairly large scale and blue-on-blue. At the top we see interlocking circles and at the bottom we see a wave or water pattern, each done as white designs within a deep blue diagonally-set bar.
The cloth is fairly heavy in the hand and as it was taken from a yukata--an unlined summer kimono--there are ingrained creases to the selvedges.
This is a richly toned length of old shibori and a good, folk example.
