A Length of Very Fine Woven Hemp or Ramie Cloth: Jofu

$85.00 USD

late nineteenth century
49" x 13", 124.5 cm x 33 cm

This beautiful and refined length of expertly woven hemp or ramie fiber cloth is known as jofu, a reference to its high quality.

More than likely this length is from the Omi area in Shiga prefecture that produced Omi jofu.

The fine-as-silk bast fiber cloth shows a pattern of wisteria blooms set against layered, complex geometric designs, the visual disparity between the organic image and the sharp-edged one is effective.

The color is natural indigo and the drape of the cloth is supple.

A real beauty, and wonderful length of very high quality, old bast weaving.
