A Length of Undyed Hemp Mesh: Mosquito Netting
early twentieth century
60" x 13", 152.4 cm x 33 cm
This is a length taken from a large, mosquito net, a tent-like structure that was hung inside homes over the family futons.
This piece is woven from undyed, natural-colored bast fiber yarns which over the years have acquired an uneven, dark color from exposure to smoke inside a family's home while in service as a kaya or mosquito netting.
The cloth is mesh-like and fairly supple to the touch; it is so softened from wear it almost feels like cotton. The surface is worn and slightly pitted with small snags and faint holes, two of the more prominent ones are shows here on the detail photos.
This is a wonderfully rustic, naturally color-toned length of good, old mosquito netting of good size and in used condition.
