A Length of Undyed Bast Fiber Kaya: Mosquito Netting Panel
early twentieth century
52" x 13", 132 cm x 33 cm
This is a length taken from a large, mosquito net, a tent-like structure that was hung inside homes over the family futons.
This piece is woven from undyed, natural-colored bast fiber yarns which over the years have acquired a dark color from exposure to smoke and time while in service as a kaya or mosquito netting.
The cloth is mesh-like and wiry to touch. There is one coin-sized stain to the piece which hardly detracts from the overall look of the piece.
This is a wonderfully rustic and beautifully colored length of good, old mosquito netting of good size and in used condition.
