A Length of Thickly Woven Cotton: Dark Toned Basketweave Pattern
early twentieth century
48" x 13 1/4", 122 cm x 33.5 cm
This length is a type of woven cotton cloth which whose pattern was widely popular in mid-to-late nineteenth Japan.
The pattern is a resembles basket weave or a "split bamboo mat." Referred to in Japan as sankuzushi, and because it was an in-demand type of design, this woven plaid was produced in myriad variation: and scale. In this case, the size of the sankuzushi pattern is relatively small and the colors are dense and saturated.
The cloth is thickly woven and very sturdy. It seems to have been taken from a kimono.
Sankuzushi seems to have its origin in India; it seems to have then been adapted by the Chinese. No wonder this beautiful cloth found its way to Japan and was produced there by native hands.
It is a beautiful length of cloth from 19th century Japan and it is in very good, used condition.
