A Length of Striped Cotton: Large Patches and Good Stitching
$65.00 USD
ca. early twentieth century
61" x 13", 155 cm x 33 cm
This lovely length of indigo dyed cotton boro is well-used and shows eleven applied cotton patches.
Most likely taken from a futon cover, the cloth is faded, well-worn, and has softened with age. The stripes are lovely and the central, red/orange colored stripe has probably been dyed in safflower or benibana.
The contrast of big, blocks of solid colored cotton patches at the top of the length with the soft, wide stripes of the bottom is beautiful.
A wonderful old piece of cotton that offers us a glimpse into everyday life in old Japan.
Beautiful.
