A Length of Soft Itajime Shibori Cotton: Loose Grid
mid twentieth century
50" x 12 1/2", 127 cm x 31.5 cm
This supple, lightweight--almost gauzy--cotton cloth was probably taken from a traditional Japanese diaper. It is dyed in the itajime shibori or clamp dyed method.
The cotton would have been folded, then clamped, and then the edges would have been dyed. The result is this pale blue, indigo dyed grid.
The indigo color is of medium tone and is somewhat faded.
Please note that the selvedge edges are a bit frayed and nicked and there is a green colored stain or mark which is shown on the accompanying detail photos and is not distracting to the overall simple beauty of this shibori cloth.
