A Length of Shibori: Kumo as Lattice
ca. early to mid twentieth century
52" x 13", 132 cm x 33 cm
This is an elegant length of indigo dyed shibori cotton that shows a network of small kumo or spiderwebs that are formed in a grid pattern, making a kind of lattice pattern.
The cotton is most likely not hand loomed and the indigo color is deep, almost inky and verging toward a murky and deep purplish blue. The cotton, being pinched as it was to create so many small, resisted circles, is also very wrinkled from this process, which adds charm and artfulness.
This length was taken from a yukata or an unlined kimono and it shows vestige of creasing from its former life as a garment.
A lovely piece of shibori.
