A Length of Shibori Dyed Cotton: Stenciled Squares

$75.00 USD

early twentieth century
46 1/2" x 13 1/4", 118 cm x 33.5 cm

This is a lightweight woven cotton length which is composed of three, hand stitched pieces.

It is of indigo dyed miura shibori which has been dyed in such a way where there are alternate empty round areas over which a stenciled square with an stylized family crest is embedded. One of the family crests is, as is obvious on the second detail photo, slightly stained, either from the dyeing process or otherwise.

The pieced length would have been taken from a yukata which is an unlined, casual summer kimono.

The graphic impact of the hard-edged square "cells" against the watery miura shibori is of vital visual note.

Just lovely.
