A Length of Shibori Dyed Cotton: Blue on White Pattern #2
early to mid twentieth century
26" x 13 1/2", 66 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton shibori that was produced in Arimatsu, one of the towns in Aichi prefecture that was a leading producer and innovator in the production of shibori.
The pattern shows large scale undulating lines of blue-on-white, deeply dyed indigo shibori that are pitched on the diagonal. This background design is interrupted by stylized plum blossoms that are dappled with tied shibori.
The stitched and tie dyed pattern is dyed onto a length of commercially loomed, fairly lightweight cotton and is in good, used condition.
Wonderful to look at!
