A Length of Rustic Hand Plied Hemp Kaya: Patched Mosquito Netting
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
80" x 13", 203.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a particularly good length of rustic hemp mesh cloth that has faded to a lovely pale green-blue tone.
This is a panel from a kaya or mosquito netting, hence the very loose, open weave of the cloth; the color is a very warm blue that can leave you wondering, "is this blue, or is this green?"
The color might vary depending on the ambient light conditions; the hemp yarns are wiry and have taken the dye in a slightly uneven fashion, which adds to the country appeal of this length. The yarns are old and hand plied: the texture they lend this length is just beautiful.
The three applied patches, each with mending stitches, add charm to this good sized length of old hemp mesh.
A very good old kaya panel, notable for its rustic hand plied yarns.
