A Length of Resist Dyed Cotton: Section from a Noren

This is a length of heavyweight, indigo dyed cotton that was part of a larger piece: it was taken from a noren or a multi-paneled door covering and this is one panel from what must have been at least a five panel noren.

When seen as a whole the resisted, undyed areas would have formed a kanji or Chinese character, undoubtedly a family name. 

This length shows a good deal of surface wear and light fading.
