A Length of Pleated Shibori: Blue on White
mid twentieth century
52" x 12 3/4", 132 cm x 30 cm
This is beautifully striped length of indigo dyed cotton which was made using the shibori technique called suji, a kind of hand pleating.
The vertically-oriented stripes are almost evenly spaced. Each of the stripes is broken in even, short dashes which is the result of the cloth being bound before it was dipped in the dye bath.
The length was taken from a yukata, an unlined, casual kimono, and as such it shows some ingrained creases from wear and it also shows a small repair, pictured on the detail photos that accompany this post.
The cotton is bright white and the indigo is a nice, warm shade of blue. A very handsome length of old shibori.
