A Length of Plaid Zanshi Ori: Passage of Leftover Yarns

$80.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
62" x 13", 157.5 cm x 33 cm

At first glance this length of hand spun, hand woven indigo dyed cotton cloth seems to be a regular plaid design, which in some ways it is.

But if you look carefully at the top of the length you will see white flecks to some of the weft yarns: this is evidence of weaving with leftover yarns. In Japan leftover yarn weaving is called zanshi ori.

In this case there is not a wide passage of the cloth that is woven with leftover yarns but this subtlety makes the overall effect somewhat more interesting.

Even without the inclusion of the leftover yarns this is a handsome and very traditional looking length of hand woven Japanese cotton; it was no doubt part of a futon cover.

Have a look at the attending detail photos which give a sense of the flavor and patina of the length which is beautiful.
