A Length of Plaid Cloth: Cotton Warp and Hemp Weft
early twentieth century
46 1/2" x 13 3/4", 118 cm x 37.5 cm
This is a length of rustic cloth that is hand woven of a cotton warp and a roughly plied hemp weft.
The cotton warp shows a pale blue/green, white, and rust colored stripes; the weft shows woven areas of equal widths of hemp yarns in three different shades: undyed, brown and pale blue/green. The final effect of the woven cloth is a subtly striped plaid.
The cloth is stiff and does not drape--the heavy, almost unprocessed hemp yarns are so rough that they prevent draping or flexibility.
This is a handsome length of old cloth that is made of two core materials each of which is important in the production of Japanese folk textiles.
