A Length of Plaid and Kasuri Cotton: Flower and Plaid
early twentieth century
63" x 12 3/4", 160 cm x 32.5 cm
This is a beautiful length of egasuri or picture kasuri indigo dyed cotton: it shows a large-scale "melon flower" in between segments of large-scale plaid. This length was taken from a futon cover.
It is a wonderful combination both for its graphic boldness as well as for its fine execution.
The cotton seems hand spun and the length is certainly hand woven. There are two small mending patches on the back of the cloth, not unusual for cotton cloth of this age.
A very good piece of old kasuri.
