A Length of Pieced, Patched and Mended Cotton: Long
$65.00 USD
early to mid twentieth century
82 1/2" x 13", 209.5 cm x 33 cm
This monochrome length of recycled cotton cloth shows several patches and is austere in its low-contrast tonality and its otherwise simple appearance.
About 2/3 of it is double layered and it seems very likely that that this was part of an obi shin which is a kind of obi lining that is meant to give form and heft to an obi, to give the obi the characteristic stiffness that holds its shape when tied.
A portion of one of the two short sides is folded in on itself so that end is a bit narrower than the rest.
So many possibilities for display or application.
