A Length of Picture Kasuri: Unusual Warp of Leftover Yarn
early to mid twentieth century
59" x 12 1/2", 150 cm x 31.5 cm
This length of indigo dyed kasuri cloth is of a deep, rich blue color. It shows a repeat pattern of weft based woven images of peonies and Buddhist swastikas: each image is delicately rendered in large scale.
What makes this length unusual, interesting and beautiful is that the warp yarns are of leftover kasuri cotton yarns; the random placement of these warp yarns results in the static-like blue and white effect of the background.
The length is in good condition and shows little wear. As mentioned above the indigo tone is rich and velvety and the pictures woven into the cloth are clear.
With its zanshi or leftover warp yarns this is not an often seen type of kasuri cloth.
