A Length of Picture Kasuri: Money Bags and Folding Fans

$95.00 USD

early twentieth century
61" x 12 3/4", 155 cm x 32.5 cm

This is a charming length of egasuri or "picture" kasuri. It is indigo dyed cotton which is woven using yarns that have been resisted in a predetermined way before they were dyed. In doing this, when woven, the yarns will form a design which is woven into the cloth.

Here was see a beautiful repeat pattern of two complete money pouches and almost two entire folding fans: one of the folding fans is slightly incomplete due to the cloth being cut through the image at the bottom.

The folding fan is an auspicious image that symbolizes the opening of things which is why it is sometimes pictured on trousseau textiles. This folding fan shows a curious image of wood sorrel, perhaps it is a family crest.

The meaning of the money pouch is evident: it is an image meant to convey good fortune.

The cotton is well-faded and the cloth is softened from time and wear.

This is a lovely length of kasuri cotton with lively, beautifully-realized images.
