A Length of Picture Kasuri: Buddhist Pearls and Folding Fans
early to mid twentieth century
58" x 13", 147.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a very handsome length of indigo dyed cotton weft-based egasuri or pictorial or figurative kasuri that shows a balanced, repeat pattern of two alternating images set into frames.
The "windows" are demarcated by stripes dyed a yellow color. Alternating we see a folding fan and symmetrical, geometric pattern with a Buddhist pearl inset in center.
More than likely this length of cloth was produced in Kurume, Kyushu, which was a major center of kasuri production of a particular type.
This length shows good, bright and deep indigo color with very little signs of wear with the exception of a tear to the selvedge which is illustrated in the accompanying detail photos.
A beautiful length of hand woven kasuri cotton.
