A Length of Patched Katazome Dyed Cotton: Faded Complex Pattern

$145.00 USD

late nineteenth century
72 1/2" x 14 1/4", 184 cm x 36 cm

This is a long, faded and beautiful length of old katazome dyed cotton. The intricate pattern shows a repeat pattern of hexagons inside of each of which is a stylized chrysanthemum and its leaves.

The hexagon pattern is a stand-in for tortoiseshell which in the parlance of symbolism conveys a wish for a long life (tortoises live a very long time as we know).

The pattern is colored in grey with orange and white highlights. The cloth was stencil resisted on both its sides which gives the pattern a clarity it might not have were it stenciled only on one of its sides.

The light fading and abrasion from wear is strong especially in the middle, center part of the cloth, on the right hand side.

There are four mending patches--two in solid blue and two in patterned cloth--that stud the surface of the cloth and add a delightful visual appeal.

The intricate stencil dyeing and the application of color to this length is quite remarkable and it sets this length of katazome cloth apart from others because of the kind of expertise required to make it.

Recommended.
