A Length of Patched Kasuri Cotton: Complex Pattern
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
67 1/2" x 13 1/4", 171.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a length of thickly woven kasuri cotton that is bold in its pattern and rich in its color and design.
The cloth is woven as plaid that shows white colored woven designs that appear in the center part of the length. The images are abstractions of forms found in nature. The honeycomb-like design is tortoiseshell, for example.
There is an area of patched mending to the cloth which is shown in the detail photos here and overall, otherwise, the cloth is in good, used condition with very little evidence of surface abrasion or light fading.
This is a super handsome length of old kasuri cotton that bears a sophisticated design: quite elegant. Pay attention to the woven "basket weave" effect at the juncture of the horizontal and vertical wide stripes.
Beautiful.
