A Length of Patched Indigo Dyed Cotton: Very Fine Stitching
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
54" x 13", 137 cm x 33 cm
This simple beauty is an indigo dyed length that is mended with deep blue toned patches that match the ground cloth as well as with a paler toned indigo, large patch on the upper half of the length.
Pay attention to the very fine stitching on the pale blue patch: the dot and dash style of sewing is a traditional one in Japanese sewing and mending and here it is, very beautifully done in regular rows and with great delicacy.
The cloth is hand woven from beautiful hand spun yarns which enrich the visual appeal of this humble-yet-beautiful cloth.
This is a wonderful length of mended, Japanese cotton.
