A Length of Northern Shibori: Rustic, Hand Spun Cotton

$90.00 USD

early twentieth century
29" x 13", 73.5 cm x 33 cm

This length of hand spun, hand woven cotton is joined of two pieces that are hand stitched together.

It is shibori dyed and the manner in which the shibori is applied to the cloth is rustic--and very charming.

The pattern is one of fragmented asanoha or hemp leaves which seem to be floating or falling against a dotted background.

The shibori is charming in its rusticity, but it is really the hand spun cotton that supports the beauty of this length. When collecting Japanese folk textiles, the "thread flavor" or ito aji as it is called in Japan is an important consideration, and this piece is rich in that important characteristic.

Recommended.
