A Length of Northern Shibori: Long Length of Beautifully Graphic Pattern
early twentieth century
65" x 12", 165 cm x 30.5 cm
This is quite a good sized length of northern Japanese stitched shibori cotton, more than likely coming from the Tohoku or Japan's rural northeast region.
The pattern is one of cross-shapes arranged in neat rows, the crosses being undyed and the ground being a deep, velvety blue/black tone.
There is evidence (very faint, almost unnoticeable stains) that this length was pleated or scrunched lengthwise.
Seeing this one can surmise that this length was used as a baby sling: the length is right and the wear pattern--now almost all gone--corroborate this assumption.
In general the overall condition is good and used with one, glaring stain at the top of the length.
This is a beautiful length of old shibori dyed cotton with a strong visual presence and a very handsome pattern.
