A Length of Nagoya Sarasa: Tortoise Shell and Plant Forms

$65.00 USD

mid twentieth century
70" x 13 1/4", 178 cm x 33.5 cm

This is a beautifully designed length of cotton of a type referred to as Nagoya sarasa, an indication that its design makes reference to Indian trade cloth, even if this reference is oblique.

The design of the pattern is large in scale and is tight in its color palette as it shows subtle variations on a brownish tone. The design is based on interlocking hexagons, or the tortoise shell motif, on top of which are shown ivy leaves and what appear to be carnation-like flowers.

An interesting length of cloth, probably dating to the 1930s or 40s, this fancifully designed length of cotton has a few small holes and snags, but over all it is in good, used condition.

A curious and unusual pairing of motifs.
