A Length of Mended Wide Cotton: Wasarasa

$95.00 USD

early twentieth century
27 1/2" x 28 1/2", 70 cm x 72.5 cm

This is a wide piece of cotton cloth with a repeat pattern of a nature that is called wasarasa in Japan, or, a design that is vaguely inspired by Indian trade cloth. The cloth is darkened from age and wear and it is beautifully faded.

The repeat pattern is that of hexagons, each of which contains a flower form. The pattern is in good scale relative to the size of the cloth which is almost square. The cotton is fairly lightweight.

Wonderful to see on this cloth is the large, contrasting, dark colored patched mend to the left hand side of the piece which, in essence, adds a good dash of visual interest to this lovely, old cotton cloth.

Very attractive.
