A Length of Meiji Era Plaid Cotton: Beautiful Color
$65.00 USD
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
61" x 13 1/2", 155 cm x 34 cm
This is a very handsome, large scale, checked cloth with very interesting coloration and design.
This is a panel from what was undoubtedly a futon cover; the cotton is very tightly woven and is nicely heavy to the touch. The bold plaid, somewhat of a tartan, is of two tones of indigo--dark and medium--with orange colored warp and weft directional stripes, likely safflower dyed, or benibana as it is called in Japan.
A small, match head sized hole to the piece (more like a snag), otherwise the piece is in very good condition.
Really lovely.
