A Length of Lovely and Spare Katazome: Indigo Dyed Hemp
ca. late nineteenth century
48" x 14", 122 cm x 35.5 cm
This length of indigo dyed katazome hemp cloth shows a lovely patina from wear.
The repeat pattern of this stencil resist dyed cloth is that of a sparsely populated field of well covers, beautifully dyed and resisted.
The wear to this length of rustic cloth is overall and slightly uneven, but it is this warmth from human wear that adds an intangible beauty to this fragment of country cloth.
