A Length of Large Scale Simple Plaid Cotton: Blue and White Squares

$65.00 USD

early twentieth century
58" x 13 3/4", 135 cm x 35 cm

This is a length of indigo dyed cotton that is hand woven of seemingly hand spun yarns. It is a beautifully blocky plaid of three tones: dark, medium and undyed.

The result of this weaving is boldly graphic and so much fun to look at: in old Japan there was an amazingly rich diversity of plaid cloth, from small-scale and complex to large-scale and simple like this one. One can imagine the visual delight of the futon cover that was hand stitched from several of these lengths.

The length is in good, used condition, a bit faded from time and wear, a nick or two to the surface but overall it is in good shape.

Lovely.
