A Length of Large Scale Kasuri Cotton: Notched
early twentieth century
48" x 14 1/8", 122 cm x 36 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton kasuri cloth which is one-half the bodice of a han juban or half under kimono. The notch on the side of the length indicates where this length would have been folded over at the shoulder area.
The pattern is of an oversized zigzag and this aspect is interesting. In traditional Japan many kimono worn by women, especially adult and older women, were subtle in their decoration and in their coloration. Often undergarments would have loud designs and bold patterns: as they cannot be seen by the public this element was a playful one and was known only to the wearer.
This kasuri design is wonderful to look at and carries with it a kind of cultural significance due to its originally intended use.
Charming.
