A Length of Large Scale Kasuri Cotton: Arrow Feather Motif
early to mid twentieth century
58" x 12 1/4", 147 cm x 31 cm
This is a length of hand woven cotton that shows a central, kasuri dyed repeat image of yabane or arrow feathers, a traditional Japanese design.
The length, with its bold kasuri pattern has an almost Central Asian feel about it; boldly designed kasuri cloth like this were used in the home as futon covers.
The cloth is warped in yellow, blue, vermilion, white and green yarns and the central channel of kasuri is flanked by columns of stripes.
The length is fairly heavily starched as is sometimes the case with old Japanese cotton fabric. There is one stain to the piece shown in an accompanying detail photograph here.
A beautiful, exotic-looking length of hand woven Japanese cotton cloth.
