A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Some Holes and Wear

early twentieth century
62" x 13", 157.5 cm x 33 cm

This length of faded and worn indigo dyed katazome cotton shows an odd, vertically-oriented repeat pattern of bold, interlocking geometric shapes arranged in columns. The indigo dyed has faded to a pale, dull grey-blue color and the surface of this length is abraded and is pitted with small holes and tears along its length, some of them highlighted in the detail photos which accompany this post.

This length was resisted on both its sides in order to provide bright, clear contrast of tone, however the registration of the stencils on both sides is sometimes misaligned, resulting in a slightly blurred effect.

Unusual in design and with an abraded surface, this length of cotton is still quite interesting on its own or to use as an inspiration for design projects.
