A Length of Kasuri Dyed Cotton: Stylized Bamboo in a Grid

$85.00 USD

early twentieth century
41 1/2" x 13 1/2", 105.5 cm x 34 cm

This is a length of deeply dyed, indigo kasuri cotton whose pattern appears at first to be abstract. The design is that of three highly stylized bamboo stalks set into an alternating grid.

The grid is defined by narrow orange/yellow lines which are visually striking against the deep, blue-black background.  The hand of the cloth is nicely textured and tightly woven and the condition is very good and used.

The indigo tone is still deep and rich and there seems to be no apparent surface abrasion or noticeable wear.

This is a lovely, fairly unusual design in kasuri cloth that appears both abstract and pictorial at the same time.
