A Length of Kasuri Cotton: Beautifully "Modern" Design
early to mid twentieth century
53" x 13", 134.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a length of hand woven, indigo dyed cotton kasuri cloth which was more than likely woven in or near Kurume on Kyushu island. Kurume kasuri is known for its bold, large patterns and woven images.
This panel is particularly nice for its "modern" appeal. The interlocking zigzags interspersed with the sparkling, twin configurations of white squares is particularly attractive.
It seems this piece was taken from some kind of bedding, probably a yogi or kimono-shaped duvet.
Its color is still strong and rich and the pattern has a great deal of visual appeal.
Wonderful and somewhat unusual for this type of kasuri.
