A Length of Itajime Shibori: Sekka or Snowflower

$55.00 USD

mid twentieth century
73 1/2" x 12",  186.5 cm x 30.5 cm

This is a quite long piece of itajime shibori or cloth dyed in the clamp dyed method.

In the case of this pattern, cotton cloth would have been arranged in a series of triangular folds, then clamped, and then the edges would have been dyed.

The result is this field of blue on white, six pointed "flowers" which are arranged in ordered repeat.  As the pattern is that of a six pointed flower it also forms hexagons which the Japanese see as a reference to tortoise shell or the wish for a long life.

The indigo tone is deep and rich; the cotton is in good condition. This is a very nice length of indigo dyed cotton itajime shibori.
