A Length of Indigo Dyed Plaid Cotton: Home Spun Cotton

$45.00 USD

late nineteenth century
69" x 12 3/4", 175.25 cm x 32.25 cm

Ito aji, or thread flavor, the wonderful textural quality that is emblematic of hand spun, old cotton yarns, is one of the most prized characteristics of old Japanese cloth.

This length of beautiful, low contrast, indigo dyed cotton plaid cloth is rich in ito aji, and it is very much the type of cloth that was woven in homes during the 19th century.

The large-scale plaid cloth is hand woven from hand spun cotton yarns and shows two mending patches, both cotton, and possibly cut from the same cloth.

A simple and beautiful length of cotton from old Japan.
