A Length of Indigo Dyed Katazome Boro Cotton: Butterflies and Arabesques
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
70" x 13 1/4", 178 cm x 33.5 cm
This beautiful length of indigo dyed cotton boro katazome cloth is equally nice on both its sides: one side (the reverse) is patched with two patches and the proper, front side shows a a charming repeat of butterflies and peonies rendered as roundels against a background of arabesque.
The length is hand stitched from two pieces and the cotton seems to be of hand spun yarns.
There is fading and wear to the unpatched side and this is lovely as it reveals the nice texture of the hand spun cotton yarns.
The patches are beautiful and seem to be the same age as the base cloth. There are two small holes which are barely able to be seen, one of which is shown on the detail photo attached.
Just beautiful.
